Dear Readers,

I’m getting ready to get out the summer “toys” at my place
– of course, more toys = more WORK…but Michigan summers
on the lake are so worth it. Hope you had a great season and will
get a little time to relax.

I’m sure many of you enjoyed May’s “Women In Tanning” profiles
– it’s such a popular feature and fun for us to do. We decided to
give the men a turn this month, and put together our first “Tanning’s Guys On The Go” cover story. Ribby interviewed 20 men from our industry – it wasn’t easy…they were all “on the go”;) – I think you’ll enjoy getting up close and personal with these dedicated tanning pros.

For you seasoned salon operators out there, I’m sure the incentive programs offered by many lotion manufacturers have been a factor in planning your annual product purchases…it’s no secret that adding extra dollars to your bottom line is more important than ever. For those of you who may not be aware of these programs, our cover story “Grab Your Share” (p. 83) is a must read.

I spent some time on the phones in May talking to salon pros across the country and heard that sales were flat in most cases, or down. It’s for that very reason that we’re still working hard to fill our magazine with useful business tools; be sure to read our features this month – they could help you work smarter.

Speaking of smart, this month’s Industry Closeup subject is Scott Bogdan, President of Helios LLC. According to Scott, in 1988 I was the second salon owner to install Helios Version 1.1 in my stores; it came on a 5 1/4 “ floppy disk… remember those? Twenty years later, my salon chain and my franchisees are using the Helios WAN program. I’ve known Scott for over a decade, and he’s certainly one of the smartest software guys in our industry. You’ll enjoy reading his story.

I always enjoy reading our Salon Spotlights; it’s exciting to me that two of this month’s three salons have been in business just over a year. The tanning biz is still growing!

Thanks again for reading –

Sincerely,

Vince Lorraine, Publisher
